GrowArt™: Where STEM, Art, and Hands-On Learning Come to Life

GrowArt™: Where STEM, Art, and Hands-On Learning Come to Life

The best learning experiences don't just teach students something new. They give students something to create, investigate, observe, and remember.

That's the idea behind GrowArt™, an innovative hands-on learning experience from Farming The Future that brings together STEM education, art, hydroponics, plant science, and nutrition in one engaging classroom activity.

Students don't simply learn how plants grow. They create a design using seeds, care for it as it germinates, watch their artwork transform into living plants, and ultimately harvest edible microgreens.

It's art they can grow — and science they can see happening right in front of them.

What Is GrowArt™?

GrowArt™ is a soil-free hydroponic growing activity that allows students to create living artwork using edible microgreens.

Students plant contrasting varieties of Red Amaranth and Chia seeds on a hydroponic growing pad, using stencil inserts to help create their designs. As the seeds germinate and grow, red and green microgreens begin to reveal the artwork.

Over approximately 10–17 days, students can observe the growing process from seed to harvest.

The experience naturally connects multiple areas of learning, including:

  • STEM and STEAM education
  • Plant science and biology
  • Hydroponics
  • Seed germination
  • Agriculture and food systems
  • Nutrition
  • Art and design
  • Observation and experimentation

And because GrowArt™ is designed for indoor growing, educators can introduce students to hands-on gardening without needing a traditional school garden, raised beds, or outdoor growing space.

Who Is GrowArt™ For?

GrowArt™ is designed for educators and organizations looking for a creative, hands-on way to introduce students to plants, food, science, and growing.

It can be incorporated into a wide variety of K–12 learning environments, including science classrooms, STEM and STEAM programs, art classes, school garden programs, nutrition education, after-school programs, homeschool programs, summer camps, enrichment programs, science fairs, and environmental education.

For classroom teachers, GrowArt™ can become a memorable extension of lessons students are already learning.

For STEM and STEAM educators, it connects scientific observation with creativity and experimentation.

For schools without access to outdoor gardening space, it provides a compact way to introduce students to growing and hydroponics indoors.

And for students, it transforms an abstract lesson about germination and plant growth into something they can actually see, touch, create, and eventually taste.

A Hands-On STEM Activity Students Can Watch Change Every Day

Plant growth is a process students often learn about through diagrams, worksheets, and textbooks.

GrowArt™ puts that process directly in front of them.

After planting their seeds, students can observe changes throughout the growing cycle. Seeds germinate. Roots develop. Shoots emerge. Leaves begin to form. Colors become more pronounced. Designs that were nearly invisible during planting gradually turn into living artwork.

Those changes create natural opportunities for observation, measurement, prediction, documentation, and discussion.

Teachers can build additional activities around the growing process by asking students to record observations, measure growth, compare germination, photograph changes, discuss variables, or predict what their GrowArt will look like at harvest.

Instead of learning about plant growth as a finished concept, students get to experience it as a process.

Where Art Meets Science

STEM becomes STEAM when creativity enters the equation — and GrowArt™ was designed around that intersection.

Students aren't simply planting seeds in a container.

They're making design decisions.

The GrowArt™ Deluxe Classroom Bundle provides supplies for three growing rounds, creating an opportunity for students to become more independent as they gain experience.

During early growing rounds, stencil inserts help students learn how to place seeds and create recognizable patterns. Once they understand the process, students can experiment with freestyle designs of their own.

An initial. A heart. A geometric pattern. A symbol. Something entirely original.

Their canvas is a hydroponic growing pad.

Their medium is seeds.

And their artwork is alive.

Classroom Gardening — Without the Traditional Garden

School gardens can provide extraordinary educational opportunities, but not every school has the space, infrastructure, climate, staffing, or resources to maintain an outdoor garden.

GrowArt™ offers another way to introduce students to growing.

Because the microgreens grow on a soil-free hydroponic pad, there are no garden beds to build and no bags of soil required.

That makes GrowArt™ particularly useful for classrooms where space is limited.

A classroom desk, table, windowsill, or other suitable indoor growing area can become a miniature laboratory where students observe plant development firsthand.

For schools exploring classroom gardening, hydroponics, agriculture education, or farm-to-school learning, GrowArt™ can provide an approachable introduction to growing food indoors.

From Seed to Art to Food

Perhaps the most surprising part of GrowArt™ happens at the end of the project.

Students can eat what they grow.

The Red Amaranth and Chia used to create GrowArt designs are edible microgreens.

After students watch their designs develop, the plants can be harvested and rinsed, creating another valuable learning opportunity: connecting the plants growing in front of them with the food people eat every day.

That simple experience can open the door to larger conversations about nutrition, agriculture, food systems, sustainability, and where food comes from.

The seed isn't just part of an experiment.

It becomes food.

For students who have never grown something edible themselves, that connection can be powerful.

More Than a One-Day Classroom Activity

Many classroom activities end when the class period ends.

GrowArt™ keeps changing.

Students return to their projects and discover something new. A seed that hadn't germinated yesterday may have sprouted. A pattern becomes clearer. Plants become taller. Colors become more visible.

That creates anticipation — and gives students a reason to keep observing.

Because the complete growing experience takes place over multiple days, GrowArt™ can support an ongoing learning experience rather than a single isolated activity.

Students aren't simply completing a project.

They're caring for something they created.

What's Included in the GrowArt™ Deluxe Classroom Bundle?

The GrowArt™ Deluxe Classroom Bundle is designed to bring the GrowArt experience to an entire classroom.

The bundle includes 24 individual GrowArt kits, allowing students to create and grow their own projects.

Each kit includes the materials needed for the GrowArt experience, including:

  • Hydroponic growing pads
  • Red Amaranth seeds
  • Chia seeds
  • Stencil inserts
  • Planting tool
  • Misting bottle
  • Growing tray with lid
  • Reusable Art Pail

The Deluxe bundle provides enough growing supplies for three growing rounds per student, allowing students to repeat the experience, build confidence, and explore increasingly creative designs.

The reusable Art Pails can also become part of the creative experience, giving students another surface to personalize and making completed GrowArt projects ideal for classroom displays, STEM nights, science fairs, open houses, and school showcases.

Bring Hands-On STEM and STEAM Learning Into Your Classroom

Students learn differently when they're part of the process.

When they can plant the seed.

When they can make the prediction.

When they can watch something change.

When they can create something that didn't exist before.

And when they can look at the finished result and say, "I grew that."

GrowArt™ brings those moments together in one creative classroom experience — combining art, hydroponics, plant science, STEM education, and edible gardening in a format designed for hands-on learning.

No traditional garden required.

Just seeds, creativity, curiosity, and room to grow.
